our big trip - day 20: The Hague

Sunday, 5 May 2013

Back in The Hague again, we woke to a mass of snow in the back yard of our townhouse. The kids, yet again, had their coats on in nanoseconds, and were out for a play and a snowball whacking or twenty. SO wish we could have such snowfall at our house.

Our lovely neighbours and friends dropped us at Madurodam for the morning - a spectacular miniature village featuring iconic structures from all over The Netherlands. On the way, we of course had to throw some snowballs . . .

The recent snowfall meant much of the village was covered with powder, obscuring little details like the myriad miniature people and vehicles and trees that dot each vista.

We nonetheless went in. How could we resist?

Riley simply couldn't stop throwing snowballs. Scuffing in the snow, his trainers ended up getting rather wet and cold - a nice excuse to warm up and dry off in the cafe overlooking the village, and indulge in some local treats. I SO want those yellow mugs.

Then it was outside again . . . for some more snowball fun.

After Madurodam, we caught the really efficient tram to the city centre. I loved glimpsing these school kids on the side of the road, carting their bags on mini sleighs. So cute.

Once we were on foot again, the kids set about creating the mother of all snowballs, and of course, some super dooper classics that fit just-so in the palm and travel very far.

Walking into the city centre (where we had some afternoon tea), Riley chased the birds and we wandered around the lake, testing to see if the water had completely frozen over yet.

And - just for something different, we have more snowball fights.

The sun began to set over the lake and we were getting tired. We'd been on the road almost three weeks and there was something attractive about snuggling in for a read and a net surf. So we had an early night.
