our big trip - Day 27: Kanchanaburi

Saturday, 1 June 2013

Bangkok is truly wonderful but sometimes it's good to get away from the stresses of the city and into the countryside. Ah. Peace. On this day, we took a trip out to Kanchanaburi Province - a glorious and moving experience.

Even the everyday sights along the roadside were totally snapworthy. Thailand SO does colour.

The Kanchanaburi War Cemetery (Don-Rak War Cemetery) is a must-visit for any Australian. It is the main Prisoner of War cemetery for the victims of the Burma Railway, and is a heartfelt, beautiful homage to the incredible men who died under such terrible circumstances. The majority of men buried here are Australian, British and Dutch.

From the cemetery, we went on to view part of the Burma Railway which still remains today. In such humid, rugged surrounds, it's hard to imagine what these men endured, and a visit here is certainly life-changing. We also visited the Bridge on the River Kwai, and lunched there. Such a divine experience.

On the way back to Bangkok, we stopped off for an elephant ride. I can't say this was the best elephant ride experience we've ever had. The animals were absolutely divine and well-cared for but the guides and route were awful. We were so surprised by this because we've had such glorious elephant experiences in Thailand before. Do get a recommendation from others (or Trip Advisor) before committing to a riding site.

The Bridge and its rail track.

These elephants are so utterly adored by their trainers, and are such magnificent creatures. I highly recommend taking elephant rides in Thailand, where the animals are totally revered.
