a highly commended short story

I am just ecstatic and yes-there-were-tears over a Highly Commended nod for my short story The Books. I'm not only ecstatic for such a lovely nod, I'm ecstatic because literacy is something very very dear to my heart - and the number of adult Australians who cannot read (or cannot read well) would drop your jaw faster than the promise of cake.

This story is about an eldery man who cannot read, and it was entered in this wonderful competition run by the good people at National Year of Reading. The stories needed to in some way touch on the fact that it's never too late to learn to read... and this story really means a lot to me. I hope you can find a few minutes to read it.

You can download the PDF here (though for some reason the PDF conversion has resulted in some text errors). Let me know what you think!
