Author Visits

Saturday 5 December 2009

I am available to talk to your school or organisation about literacy and reading, self-publishing and the writing and marketing of children's books. I also love to visit schools, centres and libraries to read my children's books, run workshops or do interactive presentations.

For children aged 7 and under, I do interactive book readings; these run for 30 minutes.

For children aged 8 and older, I can do power point presentations on story writing and book creation. I have a variety of interactive book readings, and my history session featuring Australian Story is very popular. These sessions run for 45 minutes.

Please contact me for current rates. I do offer a discount if a book signing can be hosted after my visit - or if order forms can be sent home with kids.

Like any professional, I'm unable to offer my services gratis unless the request falls under a charity event that resonates with me, and I have the time spare. Please do make contact to inquire. I regret I'm unable to mentor or offer advice to upcoming authors.

I am a regular CBCA visiting author for Book Week, have presented at the ACT Writer's Centre and at conferences, have been a writer in residence and have taught a variety of workshops to both adults and children. In 2013, I will be presenting a series of workshops for the Australian Society of Authors. I am an experienced, interactive and dynamic speaker, and have presented to groups as large as 400.

school visit requirements.

When visiting your school or organisation, the following would be warmly appreciated:

  • Confirmation of dates and session times, well in advance
  • Venue address, parking advice and clear directions to the front office/venue
  • A mobile phone contact in case of emergency
  • Readings spaced as closely together as possible, ie: either no breaks or very short breaks in between (unless sessions run all day, when a half hour break for lunch would be great)
  • The children’s ages and number of students attending
  • A smartboard or projector setup with Power Point 2010  capability
  • A laptop that can take a USB port and remote clicker dongle (ie: two USB ports)
  • Someone on hand with technical knowledge to ensure smartboard setup doesn’t go awry
  • A cup of tea would be lovely!

I bring along a USB stick, props, books and order forms {if applicable} and will arrive 15-20 minutes before presentation to set up. I enjoy blogging about school visits but will never feature names or the faces of children online, unless agreed in writing with the school.

Please email for current charges. If you are able to host a book-signing or distribute book order forms, I can offer a discount.

I have public liability insurance to $10 million. Please advise if you require a certificate of policy currency. During Book Week in the ACT, my public liability is also covered by the CBCA. I have a current Working with Vulnerable People (ACT) card.
