COMPETITION NOW CLOSED

Okay, picture book lovers, to kick off my Virtual Launch for Australia Illustrated, what better way to get things rolling than a giveaway? I'll also be giving away some original artwork from the book, so follow along on my virtual launch this week for your chance to win!

But let's get down to the Le Book...

Australia Illustrated is a cloth-bound 96-page picture book on Australia like you've never seen before.

Vibrantly illustrated with watercolour, ink, mono-printing and digital art, Australia Illustrated not only celebrates the more ‘typical’ Australian flora, fauna and landmarks, it showcases the everyday quirks and idiosyncrasies that make Australia unique. Types of rain, Greek street food, Sydney ferries, cattle breeds, plants of the Daintree—even the quokka selfie epidemic—will delight both children and adults.

Learn more about the book right here.
For your chance to win a copy of Australia Illustrated, all you have to do is leave a comment below, telling me your favourite Aussie quirk. Use as many words as you like.

My favourite three responses will win!
Be sure to check back to this blog on 1 November to see if you're a winner,
and so I can get in touch with you! If I'm unable to contact you within
a week, I will choose another winner.

BORING DETAILS: The comp runs from 24 October to 31 October, 9pm Australian Eastern Daylight Savings Time. The winners will be announced on 1 November, right here on this blog. The comp is open to anyone, world-wide, so long as the book can be posted to an Australian or New Zealand address. This is a game of skill, not chance. The winning decisions are final. Unfortunately, I will be unable to sign the books, but when I meet you one day, bring it along, and I can sign it then!

GOOD LUCK!

Happy Virtual Launch Day, Tania... wishing you smooth sailing on calm seas with a balmy wind to send you on your way. I like to think that 'she'll be right' (which is also probably my favourite quirky Australian-ness thing)... xxx

Congratulations and goodluck with your Launch Tania. My favourite and thewierdeist Aussie quirk is cafe's toasting banana bread??? And spreading lots of butter on it??? But now I am used to it, it is quite yummy. I might not be able to go back to the British way. :-)

Congratulations on the book, looks beautiful and will be winderful as we raise our 'little Aussie's' overseas. My favourite Aussie quirk? Big things! Big Banana, Big Prawn, Big Pineapple etc. classic!

She'll be right mate! Linguistic Aussie quirks make us so unique as is your fabulous book! Have a super week T! xx

Congratulations on the launch of this beautiful book. A must have for the school library! My favourite Aussie quirkiness is how we answer in 'not opposites'. How are you?? Not bad. Where's the Big Banana?? Not far?? How much is it to get in??? Not much. Are you going there??? Not on your life!:-)

Congratulations Tania. I know you'll sell heaps of copies of your new book! My favourite Aussie quirk has to be our habit of shortening long words and names and lengthening others. A couple that come to mind are Freo for Fremantle and arvo for afternoon, amber fluid for beer and true blue, dinky di to describe something real or true! There are way too many to mention but our quirky ability to invent new names never ceases to amaze me, and confuse our visitors from overseas. :-)

My favourite Australian quirk is 'Australian friendliness.' We have the 'gift of the gab' in our beautiful country and we will talk to anyone, anywhere, at any time and about any thing ! - and we are pretty much experts on any topic ! It isn't until you travel overseas and come back that this endearing quality fills your sun bleached soul and makes you happy that you are home.
Looking forward to reading your book and joining in this fun week with you Tania x

Aussie Slang – my favourite word is ‘cranky’ – not because I like being cranky but when I realised this was a word the rest of the world didn’t know, well blow me down with a feather, did I own it! I love introducing these Aussie quirky phrases to my ankle bitters, they may be knee high to a grasshopper but there’s no time like the present to get them on board. I mean crikey, you can’t have your tin lids running around with a few roos loose in the top paddock, acting mad as a cut snake! Ta for the chance to enter and congrats on a little ripper of a book!

Hi Tania,
Your book looks gorgeous!!
My favourite quirk is how is how we often refer to others as a 'mate'. Even when we don't know that person we might refer to them as a 'mate'..a friend. It seems to conjure up a feeling of extending a hand of friendship and support when we say to others...and that is pretty cool :)

My favourite Aussie quirk is the Sausage Sizzle, because they are often held on Saturday mornings in your local community. You get a affordable breakfast plus an opportunity to meet locals and talk with them about their commitments to local charities and organisations. There are many resources about sausage sizzles, including a guide on safety by Food Standards Australia and New Zealand. It seems we share the sausage sizzle with New Zealand. However, Australia took the sausage sizzle to a whole new level during the 2016 Australian Federal Election, with a website devoted to tracking the location and quality of sausage sizzles, cake stalls and other fundraising activities on election day, and local media providing comparative reviews for consumers.

Oh I like these too - "I don't know whether I'm Arthur or Martha" and "Stop carrying on like a pork chop!" :)

That is so clever and funny Jodie! 😃

Aussie quirks- Aussie sayings like 'up at Sparrows fart', 'as obvious as a turd in a punch bowl'.. shall I go on!
vegemite on toast, barbecued everything, hills hoist.

This book looks wonderful and congratulations. Well my aussie quirk is the good old vegemite and lettuce sandwich. I used to have it on my school lunch many years ago and I still love it to this day. Weird combination you might say but thats what makes it so australian hahaha

Congrats to you Love!! I love your words of wisdom when you shared the writing and illustrating process! Write for YOU! am from the US so not real familiar with a lot of Aussie quirks but I have to share this with you...I recently found this little koala bear (I think)he's a beanie baby. His name is Brisban! And his tag says G'Day Mate! I just love him and put him in my car. He watches over me when I drive. I saw this on your cover of your book!! I got so excited. I wish you much success!!

What a beautiful book! I'm planning to get a copy to help my daughters understand and appreciate this vastly diverse patch of paradise we call home! Some Aussie quirks:
- my grandfather saying, "Hogan's ghost!" as an exclamation
- summer rain at 2:50 (just in time for school pickup!)
- saying everything's a 15 minute drive away....when it's minimum 30!
- not 'backing' ourselves because we don't want to be viewed as 'try-hards' in case we fail. Well, I'm backing you Tania - all the best for the success of a brilliant book!

My favourite Aussie quirk is our dry laconic humour. Example: once in feet-deep snow in Tasmania, my comment was on the day's weather and the local's reply was 'Yeahhh, not real tropical'.

Even in our greatest disasters and despairs, our sense of humour takes the edge off our sorrows and troubles. :-)

Sonia Brown said...

Absolutely love the book Tania :-)
My favourite Aussie quirk (well one of them because there are many) is that thongs are not only acceptable, but preferred footwear just about anywhere and everywhere once the weather is warm enough.

Sonia Brown said...

Love the book Tania!
My favourite Aussie quirk (it was hard to choose because I love so many of our quirkish behaviours) is that as soon as the weather warms up, thongs become not just acceptable, but the footwear of choice.

Jill Howard said...

My favourite Aussie quirk is "as busy as Bourke St" you probably need to be Victorian as well for this one. I have said it several times in Canberra and people look at me blankly!!

My favourite Aussie quirk is our ability to turn anything into a celebration. A casual bbq? Put on the music and party lights! A day at the beach? Take a picnic and stay out all day! A big thunderstorm? Wait 'til the rain's nearly stopped and go out to take a photo with the giant hail! Birthdays, weddings and public holidays are calls for a party, but even sombre occasions like funerals can be made into a hearty celebration of life. We're optimists, and that can be a great thing in a world that can sometimes be a bit dark and scary!
