Yo! It's yo-yos with my boy

Tuesday 4 May 2010

It's just so lovely to see your kids fall in love with activities - especially activities you secretly want them to fall in love with! I LOVE to bake and the kids have also adopted this passion.

On Sunday, while Ella was out leading horses around with little giggling poppets on them, I got busy with Riley - making yo-yos, or 'melting moments' as they are commonly called in Australia (before the US invasion!).

I adore these biscuits and was so excited to teach Riley how to make them. There was a teensy bit of panic when we realised we were low on cornflour (cornstarch) but we managed to scrape together the exact amount required. Fate.

Then we got busy with the KitchenAid, and he did it all from sifting to flicking the KitchenAid switch to rolling out the balls of dough.

Then it was icing time... with plenty of quick licks in between...

I like a plain vanilla butter icing in my melting moments, but you can also do lemon icing or any other kind. Chocolate is fantastic.

>p>Enjoy this Melting Moments recipe with YOUR kids this weekend.

Melting Moments

185g butter, softened
1/3 cup icing sugar
1½ cups plain flour, sifted
1/3 cup custard powder, sifted
Icing
2 T butter, softened
6 T icing sugar, sifted
1 tsp vanilla essence

Preheat oven to 160 degrees C. Cream butter and icing sugar then stir in sifted flour and custard powder. Scoop out the mixture with a teaspoon and roll in into balls and place on the biscuit tray. Gently press down on each ball to flatten a little. Bake for about 10 mins until JUST browning on the bottom Don't over cook.

Icing: mix all icing ingredients together, adjust for taste or consistency. Ice the bottom of one biscuits and sandwich two biscuits together to serve.

Yum! I've just started letting Abbey help with baking and she loves it so far - fingers crossed she shares my passion for it as she grows older. I've also started letting her help lick the bowl, so that should help... ;)

These look gorgeous. I am going to try them this weekend with the kids - I am not much of a baker but it is the fun of creating them together isn't it?

YUM!!
My mum used to add custard powder to the icing too and called them custard kisses.
That brings back memories. :)
