Eco Warriors Blog Tour: Sneak Peek

Sunday 1 September 2013

I'm so thrilled to be on tour with my little eco warriors, celebrating the release of my second National Library picture book - Eco Warriors to the Rescue! I'll be visiting a heap of fabulous websites with giveaways and reviews and guest posts... and here on my own blog, I'm giving you a sneak peek at the inside of the book.

What I love about Eco Warriors to the Rescue! is that it showcases a collection of botanical art most Australian kids will probably never see. The National Library has such a fine collection of artworks in its digital collection and to think so little of it would be enjoyed by the very young--I had to do something about that!

That's when the seed for Eco Warriors was sown.

The book features 11 beautiful images from some of our very best botanical artists, including my favourite, Ellis Rowan, and within those images, our three intrepid eco warriors scamper about, seeking fabulous ways to help protect our native flora. Essentially, the children enter the pages of a book - Australian Flora, Fauna and Other Curiosities - and interact with these beautiful artworks.

Here, Banjo, Ned and Matilda read up on their fave book, then disappear into the book's pages, where they meet up with their good friend, Banskia.

Banjo, Ned and Matilda are determined to scour the book's pages, looking for tips on how to save our native flora from extinction. As each tip is revealed, we meet a new plant, and at the end of the book, fascinating information on each of the featured plants is revealed.

Did you know, for example, that May Gibbs was inspired by the Banksia to create the famed Banksia Men in her Snuggle Pot and Cuddle Pie books? Can you see her inspiration in the image below?

At the end of Eco Warriors, kids can also learn about their native birth flower, as well as other wonderful information.

I hope you enjoyed this sneak peek at Eco Warriors to the Rescue! Join me on tour to learn more about the processes behind the book, and to read some reviews. You could also win a book copy!

If you are in Canberra or surrounds, come along to my Eco Warriors book launch at the National Arboretum on Saturday 5 October at 11am. More details on my blog and website soon.
